This is the message of every prophet: Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad. The Shema, the first commandment, and the Shahada all express this same truth: there is no God but the One God.
Tawhid as a systematic doctrine was also developed over time — the word does not appear in the Quran, just as 'Trinity' does not appear in the Bible. The Mu'tazila, Ash'ari, Maturidi, and Athari schools all define God's oneness differently, particularly regarding divine attributes. If theological development disqualifies the Trinity, it should also disqualify the formal doctrine of Tawhid as articulated by later Islamic theologians.
“If God commands something, does that automatically make it moral? (Divine Command Theory)”
If morality is whatever God commands, then there's no independent moral standard — anything God says becomes moral by definition, including things we'd normally consider wrong. Islam seems to accept this (what God commands is good because God commands it). But this means God could, in principle, command anything and it would be moral. Does Hijab accept divine command theory fully?
This is the Euthyphro dilemma, and Islam resolves it: God's commands flow from His nature, which is perfectly good. God cannot command evil because evil is contrary to His nature. So morality is neither arbitrary (God happens to command it) nor independent of God (existing apart from Him) — it is rooted in God's essential nature. God is good essentially, and His commands reflect that goodness necessarily. This is Ibn Taymiyyah's position and it resolves the dilemma without the problems of pure voluntarism.
The Old Testament establishes God's plurality — the Spirit, the Angel of the Lord, the Word, and Wisdom are presented as divine agents distinct from yet identical with God. The New Testament reveals this plurality as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus claimed divinity, accepted worship, and rose from the dead to validate his claims. The early Church universally worshipped Jesus as God — this is not a late invention but the earliest available evidence from Paul's letters (50s CE) through the Church Fathers.
Islam's Tawhid faces its own internal challenges: divine attributes that sound like distinct parts, an eternal uncreated Quran that functions like a second divine entity, and Islamic practices with pre-Islamic pagan precedent. The Trinity is not illogical — it is one being with three relational persons sharing one essence. It's complex, but complexity is not contradiction. God is not required to be simple enough for human intuition to grasp immediately.
I'd encourage everyone to read the Gospel accounts for themselves. Look at what Jesus actually said and did. Ask whether a mere prophet would say the things Jesus said, accept the worship Jesus accepted, and make the claims Jesus made. The evidence points to a God who entered creation, lived among us, died for us, and rose again. That's the Christian gospel, and it flows directly from the God revealed in the Trinity.
The Trinity cannot be demonstrated from the Old Testament without reading later theology back into earlier text. It was not the theology of the earliest Jewish Christians. It required centuries of philosophical development — borrowing heavily from Greek Neoplatonism — to even articulate. And it remains logically incoherent: the Athanasian formula that each person is God, the persons are distinct, yet there is one God, is formally identical to a contradiction. No amount of sophisticated vocabulary changes the logical structure.
Tawhid is the simplest, most consistent, and most historically continuous form of monotheism. It was the message of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. God is one: without parts, without persons, without partners. He does not need a son to save humanity — He forgives directly. He does not need to become human to understand human suffering — He is All-Knowing and All-Merciful. He does not need three persons to have relational attributes — He is sufficient in Himself.
I want to extend an olive branch. We will disagree on theology — and that is fine. But Muslims and Christians worship the same God, as the Quran says: 'Our God and your God is one' (29:46). We share more in common than we have in difference: belief in God, accountability, moral responsibility, love for Jesus, and respect for the prophetic tradition. Let us debate honestly but remain brothers in our shared humanity.
“Why does Christian communion involve symbolically drinking blood when the Old Testament prohibits blood consumption?”
The Eucharist is not consuming literal blood — it's a memorial of Christ's sacrifice. Even in Catholic transubstantiation, the 'accidents' (appearance, taste) remain wine. The Old Testament prohibition was against consuming animal blood (Leviticus 17:10-14) because 'the life is in the blood.' Christ's blood represents the new covenant — it fulfils and supersedes the old sacrificial system. Jesus explicitly commands it at the Last Supper (Luke 22:19-20).
This actually reinforces the Islamic point: the Old Testament prohibits consuming blood, yet Christianity overrides this prohibition by claiming a new dispensation. This pattern — where later Christian theology overrides explicit Old Testament commands — is exactly how the Trinity emerged. The original monotheistic command ('the Lord is one') was overridden by a later Trinitarian dispensation. Christianity's entire theological method involves superseding what was clearly established.
“How do Christians determine apostolic succession and which Church has authority?”
This is an intra-Christian debate — Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants disagree on this. As a Protestant, I believe Scripture is the final authority, not church tradition or papal succession. The test for true teaching is alignment with Scripture, not institutional lineage. The early Church was diverse, and authority was based on faithfulness to apostolic teaching, not hierarchical succession.
“If the Quran is in Arabic, doesn't that make Islam inaccessible to non-Arabic speakers?”
The Quran was revealed in Arabic because that was the language of the Prophet Muhammad and his community. But Islam is for all humanity: translations, tafsir (exegesis), and scholarly commentary make the Quran accessible in every major language. The original Arabic is preserved for precision — just as legal and scientific texts have authoritative original-language versions. A non-Arabic speaker can understand the Quran's message fully through qualified translation, but having the original ensures textual integrity that no biblical manuscript tradition can match.
“Didn't the Trinity evolve over centuries? Isn't that evidence it was invented?”
Theological articulation does not equal theological invention. The concept of gravity existed before Newton articulated it. The early Christians worshipped Jesus as God (Philippians 2:6-11, dated to the 50s CE — within 20 years of the crucifixion) long before the councils defined the formal terminology. Nicaea did not invent the Trinity — it settled the language to describe what Christians had always believed. Arius was the innovator; Nicaea was the correction.
But Arius had supporters across the entire Eastern Church — at times he was the majority position. If the Trinity was 'always believed,' there would not have been a centuries-long civil war within Christianity over whether Jesus was God. The Arian controversy wasn't a fringe heresy — it was half the Church. That is not a settled doctrine being clarified; it is a contested idea being debated and ultimately imposed by imperial power at Constantinople.
“If Jesus's original disciples were Jews who believed in monotheism, when and how did they start worshipping him as God?”
This is the key question of historical Christology. The earliest sources (Q source, early Mark) show Jesus as a prophet who prays to God, submits to God's will, and distinguishes himself from God. The christological titles escalate across the Gospels — from 'teacher' in Mark to 'I and the Father are one' in John, the last gospel written (c. 90-100 CE). This is literary development, not historical memory. The disciples never worshipped Jesus as God — that was a gentile Christian innovation under Paul's influence.
Paul's letters predate the Gospels and already contain high Christology. Philippians 2:6-11 ('who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped') is a pre-Pauline hymn — it predates Paul's own writing. 1 Corinthians 8:6 places Jesus in the divine identity ('one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things came'). Richard Bauckham's 'Jesus and the God of Israel' demonstrates that the earliest Christians included Jesus within the divine identity — this is not a late development, it's the earliest stratum of the evidence.
“How has the Quran been preserved — and does memorization prove divine origin?”
The Islamic tradition of mass memorization (hifz) is impressive and culturally significant, but memorization of a text does not prove its divine origin. The Iliad was memorized and transmitted orally for centuries — that doesn't make it divine. The question is about content and truth-claims, not transmission method. That said, the Quran's textual consistency is notable — but the Uthmanic standardisation involved burning variant codices (the mushaf of Ibn Mas'ud, Ubayy ibn Ka'b), which raises its own questions about what was lost.
The Uthmanic codification did not 'burn variants' — it standardised the written manuscripts to match the oral tradition that was already uniform. The companions' codices differed in personal notations and arrangement, not in content. The oral chain of transmission (mutawatir) — thousands of memorisers in each generation — is the primary preservation method, not manuscripts. This is categorically different from the Bible's manuscript tradition, which has hundreds of thousands of textual variants between manuscripts and no unbroken oral chain.
