What is dhikr in Islam and how does it help with stress and anxiety?
Dhikr (Arabic: ذِكْر — remembrance of Allah) refers to the verbal, mental, and physical acts of remembering Allah — phrases like *SubhanAllah* (Glory be to Allah), *Alhamdulillah* (Praise be to Allah), *Allahu Akbar* (Allah is Greatest), and *La ilaha illa Allah* (There is no god but Allah). The Quran states explicitly: *'Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.'* (Ar-Ra'd 13:28). Dhikr is Islam's prescription for the anxiety, restlessness, and emptiness that comes from disconnection from Allah.
What is Waswaas and how does Islam tell us to deal with insinuating thoughts from Shaytan?
Waswaas (وسواس) refers to the insinuating, whispering thoughts that Shaytan places in the mind — including doubts about Allah's nature, intrusive thoughts during prayer, and thoughts that feel too terrible to even speak aloud. The Prophet ﷺ addressed this directly: the very fact that these thoughts disturb you is a sign of faith. He prescribed six specific cures, all drawn from the Quran and Sunnah.
