البقرة
ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ ٱلْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ ۚ لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَىْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَـُٔودُهُۥ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِىُّ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
Translation
Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
Tafsir (Commentary)
Known as Ayat al-Kursi (The Verse of the Throne), this is widely regarded as the single greatest verse of the Qur'an. The Prophet Muhammad said: 'The greatest verse in the Book of Allah is Ayat al-Kursi' (Sahih Muslim 810). It is a comprehensive statement of divine monotheism, describing God through a series of negations and affirmations: He neither sleeps nor tires, nothing exists outside His ownership, no intercession occurs without His permission, and His knowledge is absolute. The 'Kursi' (Throne/Footstool) symbolizes divine sovereignty over all creation.
Context of Revelation
Revealed in Medina. Muslims recite this verse after every obligatory prayer and before sleep, making it one of the most frequently recited passages in the daily life of over a billion Muslims worldwide.
