Sahih al-Bukhari — Hadith 3442

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

Translation

The Prophet said: 'I am the nearest of all the people to the son of Mary, and all the prophets are paternal brothers, and there has been no prophet between me and him (i.e. Jesus).'

Commentary

This hadith establishes the special bond between Prophet Muhammad and Jesus (Isa ibn Maryam). The phrase 'paternal brothers' (awladu 'allat) means they share the same father (i.e. the same divine message) but have different mothers (i.e. different laws and communities). The fact that no prophet was sent between them highlights their unique closeness in the prophetic chain. Also narrated in Sahih Muslim (2365).
