Why is a man allowed to have more than one wife in Islam?
The Qur'an is the only religious scripture in the world that explicitly says 'marry only one.' It permits — but does not encourage — a man to marry up to four wives only if he can treat them with complete justice and equality. Polygyny addresses real demographic realities where women outnumber men in many societies, and provides a dignified legal status rather than leaving women unprotected.
