At-Tahrim
التحريم
وَمَرْيَمَ ٱبْنَتَ عِمْرَٰنَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِنَا وَصَدَّقَتْ بِكَلِمَـٰتِ رَبِّهَا وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَكَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ
Translation
And Mary, the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into her garment through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.
Tafsir (Commentary)
This is the final verse of Surah At-Tahrim and presents Mary (Maryam) as the ultimate exemplar of faith — not just for women but for all believers. The masculine form 'al-qanitin' (the devoutly obedient) rather than the feminine 'al-qanitat' is deliberately used to indicate that her status transcends gender. The Qur'an names no other woman by name except Mary, and she is the only woman given an entire surah (Surah 19: Maryam). This verse is significant in interfaith dialogue as it shows that Islam and Christianity share deep reverence for Mary, though they differ on the nature of Jesus.
Context of Revelation
Revealed in Medina. The verse concludes a surah that discusses exemplary women of faith. Mary is presented alongside the wife of Pharaoh as a model of belief and devotion.
