آل عمران
إِذْ قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَا مَرْيَمُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٍ مِّنْهُ اسْمُهُ الْمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ وَجِيهًا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَمِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ
Translation
[And mention] when the angels said, 'O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary — distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah].'
Tafsir (Commentary)
This verse announces the birth of Jesus to Mary through angelic proclamation. Notable is the title 'a word from Him' (kalimatin minhu), which refers to God's creative command 'Be!' (kun), not to a co-eternal divine attribute. The title 'al-Masih' (the Messiah) is used in the Qur'an eleven times for Jesus.
Context of Revelation
Part of a longer passage about the family of Imran and the birth narratives of John the Baptist and Jesus. The Qur'an presents these as signs of God's creative power.
