Al-Hijr
الحجر
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
Translation
Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [the Qur'an], and indeed, We will be its guardian.
Tafsir (Commentary)
This verse contains God's promise to preserve the Qur'an from alteration — a claim that distinguishes it from earlier scriptures in Islamic theology. Historically, the fulfillment of this promise is evidenced by the manuscript tradition and the unbroken chain of oral transmission (tajwid) from the time of the Prophet to today.
Context of Revelation
Revealed in Mecca. The verse responds to concerns about the vulnerability of divine scripture to human corruption, as Muslims believe happened with earlier revelations.
