Sahih al-Bukhari — Hadith 3444
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
رَأَى عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَجُلاً يَسْرِقُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَسَرَقْتَ قَالَ كَلاَّ وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ. فَقَالَ عِيسَى آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَكَذَّبْتُ عَيْنِي
Translation
The Prophet said: 'Jesus, seeing a man stealing, asked him: Did you steal? He said: No, by Allah, besides Whom there is none who has the right to be worshipped. Jesus said: I believe in Allah and suspect my eyes.'
Commentary
This hadith reveals Jesus's profound respect for the sanctity of an oath taken in Allah's name. Even though he witnessed the act with his own eyes, Jesus chose to accept the man's sworn oath over his own eyesight — demonstrating extraordinary trust in the divine name and a generous interpretation of human behavior. It illustrates the character of Jesus as depicted in Islamic tradition: gentle, trusting, and deeply reverent of Allah.
