Sahih al-Bukhari — Hadith 3286
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
Translation
The Prophet said: 'When any human being is born, Satan touches him at both sides of the body with his two fingers, except Jesus, the son of Mary, whom Satan tried to touch but failed, for he touched the placenta-cover instead.'
Commentary
This hadith affirms the unique spiritual purity of Jesus and his mother Mary. In a parallel narration in Sahih Muslim (2366), the Prophet adds 'and his mother' to the exception, and Abu Hurairah cites Quran 3:36 where Mary's mother prayed: 'I seek Your protection for her and her offspring against Satan the accursed.' This divine protection is one of the miracles that distinguishes Jesus in Islamic tradition.
