Iran, America, and Israel: The History Behind the Conflict and the Islamic Prophetic Lens

From the 1941 Anglo-Soviet Invasion to the 2025 War — and What Islamic Prophecy Says About the Region

The conflict between Iran, America, and Israel is not a product of the post-9/11 world. Its roots stretch back to World War II, when Britain and the Soviet Union invaded Iran in 1941 and installed a compliant Shah. What followed — revolution, war, sanctions, nuclear brinkmanship, and assassination — unfolded over eight decades of geopolitical entanglement. This article traces that history in full: from the forced abdication of Reza Shah to the Islamic Revolution of 1979, through the Iran-Iraq War and the nuclear standoff, to the collapse of the JCPOA and the June 2025 Israeli airstrikes on Iran. The second part examines what authentic Islamic prophetic traditions say about Iraq, Syria, Persia, and the region now at the centre of global conflict — and what those narrations mean for Muslims navigating an age of fitna.

Important Update: Events Since This Lecture Was Recorded

This article is based on a lecture recorded before June 2025. Since then, the geopolitical situation described has escalated into open military conflict. On 13 June 2025, Israel launched a sustained campaign of airstrikes against Iran — targeting military commanders, nuclear scientists, and nuclear facilities — initiating what became known as the 'Twelve-Day War.' On 22 June 2025, the United States directly struck Iran's main nuclear enrichment sites at Natanz and Fordow using GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator bunker-buster bombs. On 18 October 2025, Iran formally terminated its participation in the JCPOA. By 2026, the UK, France, and Germany had triggered the UN snapback mechanism, restoring comprehensive international sanctions. The warnings and tensions described in this article have since become the reality the lecture was anticipating.

Introduction

Few geopolitical flashpoints in the modern world have generated as much anxiety, misunderstanding, and deliberate misinformation as the triangular relationship between Iran, the United States, and Israel. To most Western audiences, the conflict is framed as a simple confrontation between a rogue theocratic state and civilised democracies. To many Muslim audiences, it is framed in equally simplistic terms — a heroic Islamic resistance versus an imperial axis. The truth, as always, is more textured, more historical, and more consequential than either version allows.

This article traces the actual history of the conflict from its origins in the Second World War — when Britain and the Soviet Union forcibly removed Iran's head of state and installed a more compliant ruler — through the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the Iran-Iraq War, the nuclear standoff, economic sanctions, and the collapse of diplomatic efforts culminating in the 2025 war. The second half examines what the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said about Iraq, Syria, and Persia in the prophetic traditions — and what those narrations mean for Muslims in this moment of extraordinary fitna.

03

The WWII Origins: Operation Countenance and the Removal of Reza Shah

The story of modern Iran's entanglement with Western powers begins in the summer of 1941. Reza Shah Pahlavi, who had ruled Iran since 1925, had developed close ties with Nazi Germany. German engineers, advisors, and nationals were present throughout Iran's infrastructure. Reza Shah refused British and Soviet demands to expel them. For London and Moscow — then fighting for survival against Hitler — an Iranian government friendly to Germany was an unacceptable threat to their vital southern supply corridor, through which the Allies were channelling war material to the Soviet Union.

In August 1941, British forces invaded Iran from the south and west while Soviet forces entered from the north. The operation, codenamed Operation Countenance, lasted just four days. Reza Shah, his army overwhelmed, agreed to an armistice and abdicated in favour of his 21-year-old son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The new Shah was politically inexperienced and substantially dependent on British and later American support — a dependency that would define his reign and fuel the revolution that ended it.

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's hold on power was further consolidated in 1953 through Operation Ajax — a CIA and MI6-backed coup that overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. Mosaddegh had nationalised Iran's oil industry, ending the lucrative Anglo-Iranian Oil Company's monopoly. He was ousted, arrested, and placed under house arrest for the rest of his life. The Shah was reinstated as a reliably pro-Western ruler and subsequently became one of the United States' most important Cold War allies in the Middle East — supplied with advanced weapons, intelligence, and political backing for decades.

04

The Shah's Iran: Forced Modernisation and the Rise of Khomeini

Mohammad Reza Shah pursued a programme of rapid Westernisation he called the White Revolution. Women were banned from wearing the hijab in public spaces. Religious institutions were marginalised. Western dress, culture, and entertainment were officially promoted. The country's oil wealth funded a modernised military and a growing urban middle class — but the benefits were unevenly distributed, dissent was brutally suppressed by the SAVAK secret police, and the rural and religiously observant population felt systematically humiliated. Iran was becoming a Western showcase — at the cost of its own cultural identity.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had been a prominent critic of the Shah since the early 1960s. After leading protests against the White Revolution in 1963, he was arrested and subsequently exiled — first to Iraq, then briefly to France. From Najaf and then from a small house in the Paris suburb of Neauphle-le-Château, his message of Islamic governance reached Iranians through an unexpected medium: audio cassette tapes, smuggled across the border and distributed by hand through networks of mosques and bazaars. In the age before the internet, this was a revolution conducted by cassette.

05

The 1979 Islamic Revolution

By 1978, mass protests paralysed Iran. The Shah — ill with cancer and losing the confidence of his American backers under President Carter — departed Iran in January 1979, officially for 'medical treatment.' He never returned. On 1 February 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini landed in Tehran. His reception was extraordinary: millions of Iranians poured into the streets in one of the largest single gatherings in human history, recorded in the Guinness World Records. After decades of suppression, exile, and humiliation, the Islamic Republic was established through a national referendum.

Among the revolution's most iconic slogans — and the one that would define Iran's foreign policy for decades — was 'Marg bar Amreeka' and 'Marg bar Esrael': Death to America. Death to Israel. These were not merely rhetorical expressions. They reflected a deeply held conviction that American and Israeli power had been used to suppress Muslim sovereignty — a conviction grounded in the lived experience of the previous forty years: a foreign-installed Shah, a CIA coup, SAVAK torture chambers, the occupation of Palestine, and the complete absence of Western concern for Muslim lives and dignity.

In November 1979, Iranian students stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and took 52 American diplomats hostage. The crisis lasted 444 days and permanently severed diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States. Those relations have never formally been restored in the 46 years since.

06

The Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988): A Proxy Conflict

In September 1980 — less than two years after the Islamic Revolution — Saddam Hussein's Iraq invaded Iran. The invasion was widely reported to have been encouraged by the United States, which feared the spread of Khomeini's revolutionary ideology to other Gulf states. The Arab world largely supported Saddam. Western nations, including the United States, provided Iraq with military intelligence, satellite imagery, and — as was later confirmed — chemical weapons precursors that were used against Iranians and Kurdish civilians at Halabja and elsewhere.

The war lasted eight years and caused an estimated one million casualties on both sides, making it one of the deadliest conflicts of the twentieth century. Iran fought largely without modern equipment, under international sanctions, and without the diplomatic support of any major power. The experience forged a generation of Iranians with profound and enduring distrust of the West and the international order it claims to represent.

Ayatollah Khomeini died in June 1989, shortly after the war's end. His successor as Supreme Leader was Ali Khamenei, who had served as president and was considered a reliable continuator of the revolutionary framework. It is Khamenei — still Supreme Leader as of the time of this writing — who has led Iran through its entire nuclear era, and who issued the religious ruling that would become the centrepiece of Iran's nuclear diplomacy.

07

The Nuclear Programme: Centrifuges, Fatwas, and International Pressure

Iran's nuclear ambitions trace back to the Shah's era — the United States itself provided Iran with its first research reactor in the 1960s under President Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace programme. The programme was revived after the revolution, but it was during the late 1980s and early 1990s that Iran acquired the centrifuge technology that would bring it into direct confrontation with the international community.

The key figure was Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan — the Pakistani nuclear scientist who had built Pakistan's atomic bomb. Through a clandestine network of suppliers, Khan transferred centrifuge designs and components to Iran, Libya, and North Korea. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) later confirmed that Iran received centrifuge blueprints and components via the AQ Khan network from approximately 1987 to 1994. Centrifuge enrichment is the core technology of nuclear weapons programmes: uranium spun at extreme rotational speeds becomes progressively concentrated in its fissile isotope. Enrichment to approximately 5% is sufficient for nuclear power generation. Enrichment to 90% — weapons-grade — produces material for an atomic bomb.

When Iran's undeclared nuclear facilities at Natanz and Arak were revealed in 2002, the international community demanded transparency. The IAEA began inspections. Western governments demanded Iran suspend all enrichment activities. Through years of negotiations — and repeated crises — Iran maintained that its nuclear programme was entirely civilian, citing as definitive proof a religious ruling from the Supreme Leader himself.

The production, stockpiling, and use of nuclear weapons is forbidden in Islam, and their use constitutes a major sin. We will never pursue such weapons.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — fatwa on nuclear weapons, first issued and subsequently reiterated on multiple documented occasions (referenced in IAEA reports)

A fatwa is a binding religious ruling in Islamic jurisprudence. Khamenei's ruling against nuclear weapons has been cited repeatedly by Iranian officials and diplomats as evidence of Iran's nuclear intentions. Critics have argued that a fatwa can theoretically be reversed by the same authority that issued it. Whatever its ultimate weight, the ruling was publicly reaffirmed by President Masoud Pezeshkian upon his election in 2024 — who cited it as the foundational basis of Iran's nuclear policy — and it remains in force.

08

Sanctions, the JCPOA, and the Economic War on Iran

Beginning in earnest around 2010 and intensifying through 2012, the United States and European Union imposed comprehensive sanctions targeting Iran's oil exports, banking system, and foreign currency reserves. The goal was to pressure Iran into verifiable limits on its nuclear programme. The effect on ordinary Iranians was severe. Iran's GDP contracted sharply — the World Bank recorded a contraction of approximately 6.6% in 2012 alone, with further contractions through 2015. The Iranian rial lost more than two-thirds of its value against the dollar. Inflation exceeded 40%. Medicine, food, and industrial spare parts became scarce or unaffordable for millions.

Figure 1

The brief recovery during the JCPOA period (2016–2017) is clearly visible, as is the subsequent collapse following the US withdrawal from the deal in May 2018.

World Bank Open Data — Iran GDP growth (annual %): https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.KD.ZG?locations=IR

China, Russia, and India continued to trade with Iran throughout the sanctions period — operating outside the dollar-based financial system where American enforcement had limited reach. This economic relationship gave Iran a partial lifeline and deepened its geopolitical alignment with Beijing and Moscow. It also demonstrated to other nations the limits of US economic coercion when major powers decline to comply.

On 14 July 2015, the Obama administration reached the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action — the JCPOA — with Iran and five other world powers (the UK, France, Germany, Russia, and China). Under the agreement, Iran committed to: limiting uranium enrichment to 3.67% (civilian grade); reducing its stockpile of low-enriched uranium by 98%; redesigning its Arak reactor to produce no weapons-grade plutonium; and accepting the most intrusive IAEA monitoring regime ever applied to a non-nuclear-weapons state. In return, billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets were released and oil sanctions were lifted. Iran's economy recovered sharply in 2016 and 2017.

On 8 May 2018, President Trump withdrew the United States from the JCPOA and reimposed — then expanded — sanctions under his 'maximum pressure' campaign. He declared the deal 'defective at its core.' Iran continued to comply with the deal's terms for a full year after the US withdrawal, consistent with advice from the remaining European signatories. When it became clear that Europe could not shield Iran from US secondary sanctions, Iran began gradually and formally abandoning its commitments in 2019, restarting advanced centrifuge enrichment at Natanz and Fordow. By 2021, Iran had accumulated enough material enriched to 60% to theoretically refine to weapons-grade within weeks.

On 3 January 2020, a US drone strike at Baghdad International Airport killed Major General Qasem Soleimani — commander of Iran's Quds Force and arguably the most powerful military figure in the Middle East at that time. Soleimani was the architect of Iran's regional military strategy, directly responsible for the expansion of Iranian influence across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. His killing was ordered by President Trump without a congressional declaration of war. Iran retaliated with ballistic missile strikes on US bases in Iraq. The assassination removed the most senior Iranian military official in decades and accelerated Iran's determination to pursue strategic deterrence.

09

The 2024 Turning Point: Raisi, Pezeshkian, and Diplomacy Under Sabotage

President Ibrahim Raisi, a hardliner closely aligned with Khamenei, died on 19 May 2024 when his helicopter crashed in a mountainous, fog-covered region of north-western Iran. The crash also killed Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Raisi's death triggered a snap election that produced an unexpected — and to many, hopeful — result.

Masoud Pezeshkian — a moderate, reformist cardiac surgeon from Tabriz — won the presidential election in July 2024. He had campaigned on re-engaging with the West, restoring the JCPOA, and ending Iran's international isolation. He publicly reaffirmed Khamenei's fatwa against nuclear weapons and initiated back-channel communications with the United States through Omani intermediaries. For the first time in years, a diplomatic resolution appeared genuinely within reach.

It was at this precise moment that Israel intensified its covert operations against Iran's nuclear programme and its diplomatic infrastructure. Senior Iranian nuclear scientists were assassinated. Facilities linked to the programme were sabotaged. Israeli officials have stated openly that their objective is not merely to delay Iran's nuclear capability but to prevent any diplomatic arrangement that would allow Iran to maintain even civilian enrichment — because such capacity preserves what they term a 'breakout potential.' In their view, any deal is worse than no deal.

10

Israel's Strategic Calculus: A Quarter-Century of Warnings

Israel is widely believed to possess the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal — an estimated 80 to 400 warheads, based on declassified US government estimates and independent analyses by institutions such as the Federation of American Scientists. Israel operates a stated policy of 'nuclear ambiguity,' neither confirming nor denying its weapons. It has never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and has never accepted IAEA inspections of its Dimona facility in the Negev desert.

Israel's warnings about Iran's nuclear programme have been remarkably consistent — and remarkably recurring. In 1992, Benjamin Netanyahu, then a member of the Israeli Knesset, warned that Iran was 'three to five years away' from a nuclear bomb. He repeated substantially the same warning in 1996, 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2023. Each time, the stated deadline passed without Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon. This 30-year pattern does not necessarily invalidate the underlying concern — Iran's programme has demonstrably advanced — but it has significantly eroded Israeli intelligence credibility in international forums on this specific question.

Iran is developing nuclear bombs that will threaten Israel, Europe, and the entire world. It will have the bomb within three to five years.

Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the US Congress — 1996 (substantially repeated in 1992, 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2023)

Israel's strategic interest in preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is understandable and shares broad international support. A nuclear-armed Iran would fundamentally alter the regional balance of power and could trigger nuclear proliferation across the Middle East. However, Israel's preferred methods — military strikes, covert assassinations, and active sabotage of diplomatic processes — have repeatedly escalated the crisis rather than resolved it, and in June 2025 finally produced the open military confrontation that decades of covert operations had been trying to forestall.

Muslim scholars and analysts have also raised the concept of a 'Greater Israel' — a territorial vision drawn from certain readings of Genesis 15:18-21, describing a 'Promised Land' from the Nile to the Euphrates. It is important to state clearly that this territorial concept is not the declared policy of the Israeli government. It is, however, a live discussion within certain religious-nationalist circles in Israel and is cited consistently by critics of Israeli expansionism in the Arab and Muslim world. Whether or not such a programme exists in formal policy documents, the observable pattern of continued settlement expansion, demographic displacement of Palestinians, and sustained military dominance of the region generates persistent hostility that fuels the very instability all parties claim to oppose.

11

The Islamic Prophetic Perspective

The following sections shift from political and historical analysis to Islamic theological and eschatological commentary. The interpretations presented below represent the views of Islamic scholars applying authenticated prophetic traditions (hadith) to contemporary events. They should be understood as theological perspectives — not political predictions or statements of certainty about outcomes. Only verified and graded narrations from the canonical hadith collections have been used. Speculative or unverified narrations have been excluded. All hadith are cited with their collection and reference number.

For Muslims, no event in the world — however unsettling — is without meaning when viewed through the lens of prophetic guidance. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ left detailed warnings about the trials that would emerge in the lands of Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and Persia. He spoke of armies, tribulations, and a people who would remain steadfast when the world around them descended into chaos. As Muslims witness the destruction of Iraq, the fragmentation of Syria, and the intensifying conflict surrounding Iran and Israel, many are searching for spiritual orientation — not political prediction, but guidance on how to live with faith and clarity in a time of extraordinary fitna.

12

What the Prophet ﷺ Foretold About Iraq, Syria, and Egypt

Among the most discussed prophetic traditions relating to the current crisis is a narration recorded in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet ﷺ mentions three of the most powerful lands of his era — Iraq, Syria (Ash-Sham), and Egypt — and foretells a day when they would withhold their resources and their communities would be driven back to where they began:

Iraq would withhold its dirhams and qafiz; Syria would withhold its mudd and dinar and Egypt would withhold its irdab and dinar and you would recoil to that position from where you started and you would recoil to that position from where you started and you would recoil to that position from where you started — the flesh and blood of Abu Huraira would bear testimony to it.

Narrated by Abu Huraira

The phrase 'and you would recoil to that position from where you started' — repeated three times — is emphasised by scholars as a striking literary device underscoring the severity of what is being described: the ummah driven backward, their resources denied to them, their strength unravelled. Abu Huraira's unusual personal attestation — 'the flesh and blood of Abu Huraira would bear testimony to it' — indicates this was among the narrations he considered of the greatest importance to transmit.

Iraq today, despite possessing among the world's largest proven oil reserves, remains politically fractured, economically dysfunctional, and unable to convert its natural wealth into its own people's welfare. The country has been at war or under foreign occupation in some form for over four decades — from the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, through the first Gulf War, the sanctions of the 1990s, the US-led invasion of 2003, the rise and defeat of the Islamic State, and an ongoing contest between Iranian, American, and Shia militia interests on its soil. Syria has been destroyed by a civil war that drew in the forces of Russia, Iran, Turkey, Israel, the US, and dozens of armed factions. Both countries have, in the most visible possible way, become lands that 'withhold' their potential.

How many a city did We destroy while it was unjust, so it is fallen down upon its roofs, and how many a deserted well and castle lofty and well-built.

This verse from Surah Al-Hajj is recited by scholars when viewing the images of Mosul, Aleppo, Fallujah, and Raqqa — cities that were ancient centres of civilisation, reduced to rubble within years. The 'deserted well' and the 'castle lofty and well-built' collapsed into its own foundations. The Qur'an presents the destruction of such cities not as randomness, but as consequence — a warning for those who follow.

13

Persia in the Prophetic Narrative

The lands of Persia — modern Iran — appear in multiple prophetic traditions relating to the period before the Hour. The current visible role of Iran across the Middle East — from its military presence in Iraq and Syria, to its sponsorship of Hezbollah and Hamas, to its direct missile exchanges with Israel — has led many scholars to revisit these traditions with renewed attention.

Among the most discussed observations is that the Prophet ﷺ mentioned forces from the East rising as part of the great tribulations, and that the region of Ash-Sham would become a theatre for the most significant events preceding the Hour. Iran's deep involvement in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq — lands that fall within the historic Ash-Sham region — is noted by scholars as historically unprecedented in its scope. Never before in modern history has a non-Arab power exercised such direct and sustained military, political, and economic influence across the Arabian heartland as Iran has over the past four decades.

It is essential to emphasise clearly what Islamic eschatology does not say: it does not present Iran, Israel, America, or any state as inherently righteous or wicked in a final theological sense. Prophecy provides orientation, not endorsement. The purpose of these narrations — as classical scholars have consistently taught — is to remind the believer that these events were known to Allah before they occurred, and that the believer should therefore maintain trust in Allah, guard their own iman, and avoid being swept away by the fitna of any side.

14

Ash-Sham and the Victorious Group

Among the most hopeful of all prophetic traditions relating to this region is the hadith of the ta'ifa mansura — the 'victorious group' — those who will continue to uphold the truth until the Last Day, unharmed by those who oppose or abandon them. Two authentic narrations establish this hadith:

A group of people amongst my followers will remain obedient to Allah's orders and they will not be harmed by anyone who will not help them or who will oppose them, till Allah's Order (the Last Day) comes upon them while they are still on the right path. [The companion Muadh ibn Jabal added: they are in Ash-Sham.]

Narrated by Muawiya

A group of people from my Umma will always remain triumphant on the right path and continue to be triumphant against their opponents. He who deserts them shall not be able to do them any harm. They will remain in this position until Allah's Command is executed.

Narrated by Thawban

The specification that this group is 'in Ash-Sham' — added by the companion Muadh ibn Jabal, himself a resident of Syria — points to the region encompassing modern Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine: the very lands now at the epicentre of the Iran-Israel confrontation. For scholars, this narration provides a framework of hope within the present darkness: even as armies and empires clash across Ash-Sham, a group of believers remains standing on the truth, undeterred by the collapse around them. They are not identified by their government, their nationality, or their political alignment — but by their adherence to Allah's commands.

The region historically known as Ash-Sham (Greater Syria / the Levant) encompasses modern Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and parts of southern Turkey. This is the region identified in multiple authenticated hadith as having special prophetic significance in the end times — including as the location of the ta'ifa mansura (victorious group) and the site of the Malhama al-Kubra (the Great Battle before the Hour).

Signs of the Hour and the Believer's Response

For Muslims who feel overwhelmed by the speed of events — by the apparent collapse of stable order and the emergence of new and volatile alliances across the Middle East — the Prophet ﷺ provided specific spiritual guidance. Hudhaifah ibn al-Yaman, the companion famous for asking about evil rather than good, received one of the most practically important answers in the entire hadith literature:

The people used to ask Allah's Messenger about the good, but I used to ask him about the evil lest I should be overtaken by it... He said, 'Stick to the group of Muslims and their Imam.' I said, 'If there is neither a group of Muslims nor an Imam?' He said, 'Then turn away from all those sects even if you were to bite the roots of a tree till death overtakes you while you are in that state.'

Narrated by Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman

The image of biting the root of a tree — enduring on the barest minimum, withdrawing from all partisan sects — conveys the spiritual posture of the believer in times of extreme disorder: not passivity, but principled withdrawal from fitna. The task is preserving one's iman rather than winning political battles. This guidance is particularly urgent today, when competing voices — political, religious, and ideological — all claim to represent the authentic Muslim response to the Middle East crisis. The Prophet's answer is not to find the correct side, but to distance oneself from all sides if none is truly upright.

The Prophet ﷺ also warned specifically that the approach of the Hour would be marked by a profound corruption of truth and authority in public life:

There will come to the people years of treachery, when the liar will be regarded as honest, and the honest man will be regarded as a liar; the traitor will be regarded as faithful, and the faithful man will be regarded as a traitor; and the Ruwaibidah will decide matters. It was said: 'Who are the Ruwaibidah?' He said: 'Vile and base men who control the affairs of the people.'

Narrated by Abu Huraira

The Ruwaibidah — 'vile and base men who control the affairs of the people' — is a concept that resonates powerfully in an era of coordinated disinformation, of politicians and media personalities who have systematically misled their populations about the true nature of the conflicts in the Middle East, and of leaders whose record of stated predictions has been demonstrably and repeatedly false, yet who continue to exercise enormous influence over public opinion and governmental decisions.

The sequence described in Sahih Muslim 2897 — the Malhama al-Kubra (Great Battle) in the lands of Ash-Sham, the conquest of Constantinople, and then the emergence of the Dajjal — is understood by many scholars as a connected chain of events leading toward the final trials before the Hour. The Prophet ﷺ described the Dajjal emerging precisely while the armies of believers are assembled and preparing for battle in Syria. For scholars, this detail is significant: the greatest tribulation does not arrive before the confrontation — it arrives in its midst.

هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا السَّاعَةَ أَن تَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Do they await [anything] but that the Hour should come upon them suddenly while they perceive not?

The verse from Surah Az-Zukhruf is a reminder that the Hour will arrive not with a global announcement and a period of preparation, but suddenly — in the middle of ordinary life, ordinary distraction, ordinary sin. The signs that precede it are not theatre staged for passive observers; they are tests for those who are paying attention. The believer's task is not to predict when the Hour will come, but to be prepared for it at every moment regardless of external events — because it arrives for those who are not watching.

Conclusion: Clarity in a Time of Chaos

The conflict between Iran, America, and Israel cannot be understood in isolation from the eighty years of history that produced it. A foreign-backed coup. A revolution born from humiliation. A proxy war with a million casualties. Sanctions that ground an economy to dust. Assassination. Airstrikes. Open war. These events are not the product of a single evil actor or a singular moment of miscalculation. They are the accumulated consequence of imperial interests, broken agreements, and the repeated failure of powerful states to treat other nations as fully sovereign human communities deserving of dignity.

For the Muslim observer, this history does not lead to despair — and it does not lead to naive confidence in any political solution either. The Prophet ﷺ warned that these lands would be tested, that these conflicts would emerge, that armies would clash in Ash-Sham, and that in the midst of that fitna a group of believers would remain upright, unharmed, and on the truth. The question for every Muslim is not which empire or resistance movement to align with, but whether he or she is among those who keep their covenant with Allah when the world around them is defined by treachery and confusion.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek refuge, in every prayer, from four things: the punishment of the grave, the punishment of Hell, the trials of life and death — and the fitna of the Dajjal. That the scholars of Islam considered the trial of the Dajjal worthy of a place in the daily supplication of every Muslim speaks to the gravity of what approaches. May Allah protect the ummah from the fitna of the Dajjal, grant clarity to the Muslim world in its trials, make us among those who recognise the signs and respond with faith, patience, and certainty — and count us among the ta'ifa mansura who remain on the truth till the end.
