What is the purpose of fasting in Ramadan — why do Muslims fast?
Muslims fast in Ramadan in obedience to Allah's direct commandment in the Quran: *'O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you, that you may attain taqwa.'* (Al-Baqarah 2:183). The purpose is *taqwa* — God-consciousness, piety, and moral awareness. Fasting is not punitive; it is transformative — a monthly training programme that disciplines the body, purifies the soul, cultivates gratitude, builds empathy for the hungry, and reconnects the believer with worship and Quran.

Honouring Your Father: A Gate to Paradise You Cannot Afford to Close
Why fathers carry more than we realise, and why honouring them is among the greatest paths to Allah
Shaykh Ali Hammuda
In an era where fathers are marginalised, reduced to financial providers, and mocked in popular culture, this article reclaims the Islamic understanding of the father's role and the duty of birr — dutiful honour — owed to him. Drawing on authentic hadith and the Qur'an, Shaykh Ali Hammuda explains why the father is described as the middle gate of Paradise, the sacrifices embedded in fatherhood, and what it truly means to be grateful. The article also offers compassionate guidance for those whose relationship with their father has been difficult, and practical steps to honour him while he lives — and after he is gone.
