Under Islamic law, why does a woman get half the inheritance of a man?

The Islamic inheritance system is often misrepresented. While a daughter does receive half the share of a son in certain cases, this is because the male heir bears the financial obligation to support his family, while the female retains her share entirely for herself. When the complete system is considered — including mahr, maintenance, and the absence of financial obligations on women — a woman often ends up with more disposable wealth than a man.
