What does the Quran say about nations that were destroyed and what is the lesson for today?

The Quran repeatedly recounts the destruction of past nations — the people of Noah, 'Aad, Thamud, the people of Lot, Pharaoh's Egypt, and others — as warnings to present and future generations.
