Az-Zalzalah
الزلزلة
فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُۥ ﴿٧﴾ وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُۥ
Translation
So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it. And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.
Tafsir (Commentary)
These two verses (99:7-8) are among the most quoted in the Qur'an for their stunning moral clarity. The word 'dharrah' (atom/dust-speck) represents the smallest conceivable quantity — nothing escapes divine accounting. The Prophet Muhammad said this is 'the most comprehensive and encompassing verse for good and evil' (al-Hakim). The parallelism is striking: no good deed, however small, is wasted; no evil deed, however small, is overlooked. This establishes perfect divine justice that extends to the minutest of actions.
Context of Revelation
From Surah Az-Zalzalah (The Earthquake), a short but powerful Meccan surah about the Day of Judgment. The surah describes the earth shaking and revealing all that was done upon it, culminating in these two concluding verses.
