Why is the consumption of alcohol prohibited in Islam?

Alcohol is prohibited in the Qur'an as 'Satan's handiwork,' categorized alongside gambling as activities that create enmity and hatred and prevent people from the remembrance of God.

The prohibition is not arbitrary — it addresses a fundamental physiological reality. Alcohol inhibits the inhibitory center of the brain, which is the faculty that distinguishes humans from animals. When this center is suppressed, a person loses the ability to judge right from wrong, leading to behavior they would never engage in while sober — abusive language, violence, sexual misconduct, and reckless behavior.

The social consequences are staggering:

1. The majority of violent crimes, domestic abuse, and sexual assaults involve intoxicated perpetrators.
2. Alcohol is implicated in a significant percentage of traffic fatalities worldwide.
3. Alcohol abuse destroys families, careers, and lives.
4. Every alcoholic began as a 'social drinker' — no one starts drinking with the intention of becoming addicted.

The medical consequences include over 19 categories of disease: liver cirrhosis, multiple forms of cancer (liver, esophageal, throat, breast), cardiomyopathy, strokes, peripheral neuropathy, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, Delirium Tremens, endocrine disorders, blood disorders, increased susceptibility to infections, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, skin diseases, and more.

Notably, the Bible also prohibits alcohol: 'Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise' (Proverbs 20:1). 'And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess' (Ephesians 5:18).

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that alcohol is 'the mother of all evils' and that 'anything which intoxicates in a large quantity is prohibited even in a small quantity.'

Islam's approach is preventive rather than reactive: instead of dealing with the devastating consequences of alcohol abuse after the fact, it eliminates the root cause entirely.
