If Islam is the best religion, why are many of the Muslims dishonest, unreliable, and involved in corruption?

This is one of the most common observations made about Muslims, and it deserves an honest response. The key principle is simple: judge Islam by its teachings, not by the conduct of every individual who claims to follow it.

Consider an analogy: if you want to evaluate how good a car is, you don't judge it by watching the worst driver on the road. You study the car's design, engineering, and performance specifications. Similarly, Islam must be evaluated based on the Qur'an and the authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — not by cherry-picking the worst examples of Muslim behavior.

Several important points address this concern:

1. Islam explicitly prohibits dishonesty, injustice, and corruption in the strongest terms. The Qur'an states: 'O you who believe, why do you say what you do not do? Most hateful it is with Allah that you say what you do not do' (61:2-3). Muslims who engage in dishonesty are acting against their own religion.

1. If you read the Qur'an and study the teachings of the Prophet, you will find a comprehensive system that promotes honesty, transparency, social justice, and personal integrity. The failing is in the followers, not in the faith.

1. Despite the shortcomings of some Muslims, Islam remains the fastest-growing religion in the world. If people were judging Islam solely by Muslim behavior, this would not be the case. Many converts specifically cite the beauty of Islamic teachings (despite the behavior of some Muslims) as the reason for their conversion.

1. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself warned: 'A time will come upon people when nothing of Islam will remain except its name, and nothing of the Qur'an will remain except its script.' This prediction acknowledges that Muslims would eventually fall short of Islamic ideals.

1. Among the 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide, there are countless examples of extraordinary honesty, charity, scholarship, and service to humanity. Focusing only on negative examples reflects selective observation, not objective analysis.

The Qur'an addresses this reality directly: if Muslims were perfect, there would be no need for guidance, warnings, or a Day of Judgment. Islam acknowledges human imperfection and provides both the standard to strive for and the mechanism of repentance for those who fall short.
