Does the Qur'an tell Muslims to kill non-Muslims?

One of the most common attacks against the Qur'an is the claim that it orders Muslims to kill non-Muslims. Critics frequently cite Surah At-Tawbah 9:5 — often called the 'Verse of the Sword' — to support this claim. Let us examine this verse in its full context.

The verse states: 'And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give Zakah, let them go on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'

Critics who quote this verse commit a fundamental error of reading: they strip the text of its context. If you take any text from any book — religious, legal, or otherwise — out of its context, you can make it say anything.

The context is critical. The opening verses of Surah At-Tawbah describe a peace treaty that existed between the Muslims and the polytheists of Makkah. This treaty was unilaterally broken by the Makkan polytheists. It is in this specific context of broken treaties and battlefield confrontation that verse 5 instructs Muslims not to be intimidated when facing an enemy that has already attacked them and violated peace agreements.

Any army general or head of state in history, when addressing soldiers in a battlefield scenario against treaty-violating aggressors, would give similar instructions: fight the enemy, do not retreat. This is military language in a military context.

Crucially, critics who quote verse 5 deliberately skip verse 6, which immediately follows. Verse 6 states: 'And if anyone of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety.'

Consider the magnitude of this command. Which army general in the world today would instruct his soldiers to not only cease fighting an enemy who seeks protection, but to personally escort that enemy to a place of safety? The maximum any commander might say is 'let them go.' But the Qur'an goes further — it commands Muslims to actively ensure the safety of a surrendering enemy.

This is the verse that critics deliberately omit, because it demolishes their narrative entirely. It demonstrates that the Qur'an's approach to conflict includes extraordinary provisions for mercy, protection, and the preservation of human life — even the lives of those who were, moments before, active enemies.

The Qur'an states clearly elsewhere: 'Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption done in the land — it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one — it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.' This applies to all human beings, Muslim and non-Muslim alike.
